Barbara Murray
Barbara, originally from Columbus, returned to the area with her husband when he retired from pastoral duties at a Congregational Church in West Virginia. With five children residing in the vicinity, they chose Hilliard as it was centrally located for family visits. Tragically, her husband passed away just a year after their move, and she has since called Hilliard home for the past 18 years.
While she finds Hilliard's rapid growth challenging, Barbara is adjusting and adapting to the changes. Her interest in history led her to explore the Historical Village. About two and a half years ago, she attended a volunteer event at the Hilliard Senior Center, where she signed up as a volunteer. A dedicated member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), she accompanied her friend Carolyn, also active in both organizations, to the planning of the Village’s 50-year anniversary dedication. Given her love for history, Barbara decided to volunteer at the genealogy library. At that time, the previous librarian, Marilyn Evans, was preparing to retire, and Barbara stepped into her role.
When asked what she enjoys most about the Historical Society, Barbara responded immediately with “The Village.” Since joining, she has explored the Village’s historic sites, remarking, “Sometimes I think I was born a century too late.”
Barbara envisions a future with more volunteers and funding for the Historical Society, recognizing the vast potential for the Village to grow and enrich the community. Also, she wishes more people knew about the wealth of resources available at the genealogy library and is continually inspired by the Society's impact and events.
Beyond her work with the Historical Society, Barbara is active with the Hilliard Senior Center, the DAR, the Hilliard Methodist Church, and hospice care, allowing her to connect deeply with both local history and the community
